Indeed. It is to usher in the New Year, with good fortune and well wishes, but it's also for guidance and remembrance as well. Originally, the lanterns were lit to remind soldiers of the way home - and to remember that there were loved ones waiting for their return.

Now, we light lanterns and set off fireworks to celebrate those lives and the coming year. Every Lantern Rite, a different fallen hero is chosen as the centerpiece, their likeness or symbol to be made into the Mingxiao Lantern.

Those soldiers probably really appreciated that. [To be remembered, to have people care for them, even when they were away.]

Celebrating the fallen... that's also very kind. Do you think they'd be able to see it?

I know that I did, when I saw them. [ to know that their people were safe, because of them. that there was a home to return to. ]

I'd like to think so, truthfully. Many of them have been for fallen comrades that I knew, that I had laughed and lived with for so long.

It's hard when you live for a long time, isn't it?

[ So many people, gone from your life. ]

[ a wistful smile is his answer, at first, before he nods as his tail curls closer to her. ]

It is. I often wonder if it is better or not, when we might be able to say goodbye to them.

It was rare I ever got to say goodbye. [ A pause. ] I would've liked to.

[ he's quiet for a moment, before setting his hand on her arm. ]

Let us find some sparklers, then, Miss Firefly. One for each friend that you want to say goodbye to. We will dedicate this night to them, and perhaps... wherever they are, they'll be able to witness this fireworks display.

I'd like that.

[ Her arm feels like armor, even underneath the fabrics. Time to get up and start looking.

She needs a lot of sparklers for this. ]

[ he doesn't question it, considering that he's displaying his full adeptus heritage with his exuvia traits at the moment. they can talk about it if she wants to, but he won't pry, considering what they're doing now.

he'd rather they could find lanterns or fireworks, but sparklers will do. probably for the best they don't just "sell" them out in the open. ]

However many we need, we'll see it through to the last firework tonight.

[ Fireworks can do a lot of damage if set off in short range... better that they aren't easy to acquire. ]

There were tens of thousands of us once.

[They didn't all exist at the same time, of course. So many of them died from battle before she was ever created.]

It will likely take much more than a week.

Then so long as we both remain here, I will help you celebrate each life that was lost.

[ sincerely and simply, as if celebrating ten thousand lives lost is not some great undertaking. if they were lost, they deserve to be remembered - and to maybe see the signs that they were. ]

Perhaps we can construct our own lantern for them. I have made many over the years, and it isn't difficult once you have a design.
